About Rock School Proprietor
Our Story
Music has the power to connect us, and at the center of all great music lesson programs, rock school or otherwise, is community!
Host John Kozicki played in punk rock bands and went to school for business, while co-host Mandy York studied vocal performance and sang classical music. Now they both run successful music lesson businesses.
With vastly different backgrounds, each week Mandy and John cover topics from teaching and business strategies to philosophy and culture. Keeping one another in check while always looking for the sweet spot in the middle, John and Mandy turn their experiences into practical advice you can use to create an amazing community in your music lesson business.
Meet The Host John Kozicki
John Kozicki used to live a double life: Account Executive in marketing and public relations by day, touring rock musician on nights and weekends. But the duality of a superhero-like lifestyle just wasn’t sustainable, so he set out to build a career for himself that married his experience in business and passion for music. He quit his office job (and eventually the touring) and began to focus on teaching music. Not one to maintain the status-quo, John wasn’t content to provide a traditional private music lesson experience for his students, even from his earliest days teaching guitar lessons. Similar to his own path, he knew that true success for music students results when they can blend both knowledge and passion.
With nearly 20 years of experience teaching private lessons and facilitating rock band programs, Kozicki has seen firsthand the benefits of a more dynamic, experiential approach to music lessons. Having built two successful rock schools from the ground up – from opening, to operating, and selling – he has years of experience in nearly every aspect of running a music lesson business.
In 2014 John founded Michigan Rock School, and for the first year ran the operation as a one-man show, coaching rock bands, producing live shows, and teaching private lessons on multiple instruments. Today Michigan Rock School boasts a thriving rock band and private lesson program, in large part due to the community and culture Kozicki has built and nurtured around learning and playing music.
In addition to running the day-to-day of a successful rock school, Kozicki still hasn’t kicked the dual lifestyle habit. He has worked as a consultant for small and large music brands, including launching a line of guitars for one of the largest guitar manufacturers in the world – Epiphone. Students from Michigan Rock School have been featured in a documentary film. And currently Kozicki is developing a rock band curriculum for other music schools which is projected to be available in late 2024.
